Bella has the run of the house but she is 4 1/2 years old. She was not allowed the run of th house till she was 1. I think it depends on the dog. I believe you are right about the scratching on the door. I would be bored locked in a small room all day. Having a window to look out makes all the difference. I have a Bay window and my sister made a cushion for it so Bella could sit comfortably in the window and look over her kingdom. She loves the window.

Just make sure your little one has a safe way to get up the window and back down. Bella has a cushion on the floor and she hops from that (needs traction ref wood floors) and hops onto the recliner (which is pushed up against the bay) and then hops onto her cushion.
