Default no longer confined????

I was wondering at what age you all let your dogs be not confined-(crate or playpen) while you are away. My puppy is about 6 1/2 months old and I pad and outside trained and is pretty much perfect with it. We live in a small loft apartment and have been keeping her in the bathroom when we leave but I am wondering if we could try leaving her in the living room - (her pad is there) and closing the bedroom doors so she has more room to play and can look out the windows. She has started chewing or scratching the door/door frame in the bathroom, I am assuming this is because she gets bored, but I dont think the building manager will be very happy about it. So..... back to my question, do your dogs/puppies have the run of the house or apt, or do you always keep them confined??? Thanks in advance! Ann
