I know what you mean - I'm in Texas, too, and the fleas are horrible!
Frontline is expensive, but as far as I know (and I may be wrong), it's the best stuff to use. All of our dogs use Frontline, and we typically don't have many problems. Occasionally when we've been in a common area, they'll pick up a couple fleas, but they never hang around long with the Frontline. This time last year, we had a flea outbreak in our apartment at the time. That was before we knew about Frontline, and this year, we've not seen even a hint of a breakout. I do highly recommend it
