As far as your "popularity" comment, I've never noticed such a thing. Maybe I'll pay attention to it now, but I never really have paid attention to who started a thread, I just respond to the topics that I feel I can contribute to. I never experienced this when I was a newbie, I felt an overwhelming sense of welcome and support. I'd be interested to hear if any other newbies feel the way you do, because I assure you, if there are any, there aren't a lot.
