I trained using pads because I got Jake in the fall and didn't want to have to take such a small puppy out in the snow and cold weather. Also, I had surgery after I got him, so pad training was much easier for me. I had NO problem training him whatsoever, but this is mainly because Jake has constant supervision. Now that spring is here, he will also go outside.

Pads are great for smaller dogs because you don't have to take them out in rain, snow or cold weather. They can also get up and use the pads in the middle of the night if they need to.

I think whatever is more convenient for you and your situation is the way to go. I don't think either way is a "wrong" way, and it's nice if they can use both.
