The male sometimes has issues with breeding outside of his domain. Also are you willing to "help" him line up. Don't mean to be graphic but it isn't the most pleasant thing in the world. You have to keep your eyes on them 24/7 in case of a tie to protect your male from getting hurt. Plus you have to make sure a contract is written up for you and the bitch's owner to make sure that everything goes smoothly. This is all things you can research and there is definately a ton more.
One thing you must do is make sure that both dogs are tested for brucellosis, it is a doggie std that your little male can contract from the female or vis versa~ Make sure your really serious about breeding before you do, and if you are, it is the most rewarding feeling in the world when your done. Good luck. |
this is so true, but i would also like to add that your "stud" will change after he studs. he will start marking all over the house.
also, i never get pick of the litter. i always charge a stud fee. some of the yorkies only have 1-2 babies and unless you are looking for a show quality yorkie, i would just go for the fee. most members of yt charge approx $500
another thing to consider is you male could get hurt. you have to watch them all of the time. once they tie, move them end to end or hold them in your lap (this can get messy at the end of the tie).
the female can get vicious so you will need to know what to do to calm her down.
i always keep the female at my home for 3-4 days to insure a tie on 10-12 or even the 14 day. you need to keep them separated the days in between.
MOST IMPORTANTLY.....make sure he is stud worthy, a good standard breed, healthy, and the female is also healthy and a good standard breed. (TOO MANY YORKIES OUT THERE THAT DON'T EVEN LOOK LIKE A YORKIE DUE TO POOR BREEDING AND MONEY HAPPY PEOPLE)
you will need to know the breeding and pregnancy process. be able to help them out with any questions. even help with the whelping process. the female owners will look to you as an expert so you need to start reading and researching all about breeding.
these babies are as much your responsibility as the bitches owner as you helped them come into this world.
the contract is very important as stated above. you need to have everything covered as far as....who's fault if no pregnancy (this is when you will need to be able to look at the bitch and tell if she is in standing heat and know what days to mate) if the puppies die....what happens. if there is a c-section....what?
i am sure this is overwhelming but most people do not realise what is involved until they ask the questions.
you have time. most males do not stud until they are 1 1/2 yrs of age. so you have some time to learn.
you took the first step in asking questions.
GOOD FOR YOU
