Thank you for your kind words and prayers. This disease is all new to me too, but the last couple days I have really done my research. You can pull up web sites on google search for Perthes Disease on dogs and it will give you so much info.
Yes, one of the signs is biting at the leg, but if your baby is not limping or favoring her leg I wouldn't worry too much, she might be biting at her leg now due to maybe an insect bite, allergies, or just nerves. Possibly when she begins biting her leg and seems to be agressive about it, off her a chew toy. Sometimes they just get stressed and start chewing on themselves, funny how they are.
I hope your research answers many of your questions you have. And just remember if she begins limping for long periods of time and wont use her leg and is 5-8 months of age it never hurts to visit your vet and have an x-ray done.
I found out that this disease is common in teens also, go figure.
Terrier's, especially Yorkies are highly at risk for this disease. Luckily it is fixable and have findings of no such problems later. Usually this disease is lateral also and not bilateral (both legs)...
The surgery is not expensive either, i have been quoted appx. $450.00. This could be so much worse for sure.
Again thank you for your prayers and next Friday I will give an update on her surgery and the results.
