I think this is what heartworm medicine is for, because mosquitos transmit heartworm.

I'm just wondering how likely it is for a dog to get heartworm. My family has had dogs through the past who never got a monthly heartworm pill, and all of those dogs have been quite healthy.

All of a sudden, it's the year 2000 and vets are warning me to give this medicine to Otis every month to prevent it.

I'm not too keen on giving my dog a monthly heartworm pill when no one I've ever known in CA ever had a heartworm problem. I want to know if it's really necessary to do this.
