Anywhere that you can find mosquitoes - animals should be on heart worm medicine. They do have to be tested prior to starting the medication because it works to prevent the worms not destroy them.

Our Blk Lab, Lucky, wasn't on meds one year and he did get them! He was already on phenobarbital (?) for seizures so our Vet had to confer with Dr's at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to make sure he could withstand the treatment for heartworms - which is terrible especially when we can prevent it. They have to have 2 treatments to make sure that they've killed the larva (or whatever they call them). I believe they run some kind of poison thru their system to kill of the adult worms and then again for the eggs or newborn worms... Anyway we almost lost Lucky but Thank God, he survived and lived another 10+ yrs.

Maybe they have perfected the treatment by now but it's certainly something I would do (in any case) to prevent my baby from having to go through any treatment that's preventable.
