You did nothing wrong - she was rude and annoying! Especially at a pet store - where I live people aren't overly friendly, but at the pet stores everyone is socializing.
Don't let this experience deter you from approaching people. Even if I am in a hurry I stop talk to people who are nice enough to compliment my puppy.
