If you are using a harness, that could be it. Tia used to get the worst matts in her "armpits" because we were using a harness that was made of the typical material. I ordered a silk one from Chattiesmom and haven't had a problem since. I've also started using conditioner when I bath her (she gets a bath once a week, with a thorough brushing before she gets wet) and have noticed that her hair is silkier (it could also be because I have switched her food to Canidae recently).
