Default New puppy owner, a few questions

Sorry in advance if this is too long

Hi all, I have a 15-week-old Morkie (maltese/yorkie). I've had him for a week, and so far he is doing well, but there are a few issues that I want to nip in the bud before they become a habit.

1. For two days, he cried at night in his kennel, but once I started completely ignoring him and isolated him, he learned not to be so vocal. However, today he was whining a lot when I put him in his kennel. I never keep him there for more than 2 hours at a time because I work from home. However, today we had some houseguests and he was just being BAD. He went nuts with the crying and barking today and finally he's gone to sleep! Is there anything else I can do besides ignore it? I've tried making sudden loud noises to get him to stop, but he just growls and barks at the noise.

2. POTTY TRAINING. After less than a week, he's good with his schedule. However, I've noticed something -- I have not given him much chance to make a mistake.

You see, until the middle of this fall, I am living with my parents and they don't want the pup to run free of the house and they certainly dont want him to potty inside on accident. So, when I play with him, I'm usually outside with him or playing with him on my bed.

He does not potty in his kennel or on my bed. But, a couple of times I had him in the kitchen, he made a mistake each time. Otherwise, if I take him out to potty every 2 hours during the day, he goes immediately.

My question is: What do I do in the mean time before I move out? My main concern is that while he knows that outside means potty time, he doesn't seem to understand that outside is the ONLY place he's allowed to potty.

I have a bell hanging from the back door, but I think he's afraid of it. I walk him from my bedroom to the back door, and once he gets to the back door, he stops and tries to turn away. He won't go toward the bell for anything (i even tried peanut butter on the bell). I have to nudge his nose to the bell to ring it. He is afraid of the door until I actually open the door.

He does well with holding it in the kennel, but once he's out, how will he let me know when he needs to potty?
