what you're describing could very likely be his knees. The first thing my Vet would do is give a manual exam of the knees and if he feels there is a significant problem then he would order x-rays. X-rays are done under sedation so he can manipulate the knee without the dog fighting him.

If you're concerned then schedule an appointment.
