I can say from living in tornado alley, that dealing with tornados is a lot better now. The technology allows the weather teams to predict where a tornado will be. Once it develops, they follow them with helicopters so that you know where they are. Now it doesn't mean that we never get surprizes.
Once they know where they are you take precautions, either get out of the area or go to a storm shelter. That is why the casualty counts are much lower than ever.
What you see on TV a lot is the damage. The people can get out of the area.
