My experience and research yielded that 5-7 would be optimal. You see, by neutering him at this age you prevent the secondary male characteristic from ever developing such as leg lifting, marking, fighting and desperation when near a female in heat, penis growth, etc.
personally I woulnt submit a 4 month old pup to anesthesia. And yes my boy (now an fully grown adult) doesn't miss a shot on his pee-pads with no leg lifting.
Of my five Yorkies, he and his mother are the only ones that are full time loose around the house.
