I've heard the bells used in the same way yorkielover described. You can easily make them yourself by buying the round bells and some rope and hanging them from the doorknob of the door. The idea is that the lowest bell will be in paw range of the puppy. Put peanut butter on the lowest bell to entice the puppy to go up to the bell. The moment they touch the bell, get excited and take the puppy out. After awhile the puppy will begin to understand that when they ring the bells they get to go outside. I've heard that most dogs catch on within a week and it works as a good signal to let you know they have to go out. I tried it with Bentley, but we have stairs leading down to our door and he likes to sit at the top of the stairs when he needs to go out, he doesn't like to go down the stairs and hang out by the door. I've also heard the bells work great when you go visit someone. YOu just hang the bells on their door and your puppy now knows where it needs to go out at this new place.
