If you were able to get through the hair from the skin out with a comb I have a hard time believing it was matted. What about around the collar area? Could there have been mats there? Mats are just tangles. They are down by the skin where the hair can get knotted up- sometimes you can brush over them without realizing it but if you are combing, you would feel and see them.
