Our 11 w/o Yorkie is just learning about being alone, and we've been leaving for a half-hour to an hour to get her used to the idea. If she's in her crate, she calms down in 10 minutes. When she's just in her ex-pen, it never ends. We can't even leave the room without a big production, but we try to go about our daily routine as though we don't hear her.

We've been ignoring her whines the best we can (never rewarding her, giving in or scolding her - just a little ch-ch to discourage it), with the hope that she'll figure out that whining doesn't pay.

How long until they get the picture? I'm confident we can outlast her, but I'm curious what we're up against.
