Also, to look for:
- Are the puppies kept in the house with the family, or are they separated?
- Are the puppies playful and healthy? Do a lot of them seem fearful or shy? Do they have discharge around their eyes, dirty fur, etc.?
- Is the dam (mother) on site? There should be no reason that the mother would not be on site with the pups. The mother shouldn't be aggressive. She may be somewhat wary because you're a stranger. The sire isn't on site only when a stud service was used.
- Is the overall environment clean? Are there any weird smells?
