WOW! What a story -- and with a happy ending. Glad your baby is OK!

Just one note on the gums. Rat poison might be one cause of pale gums, but anytime an animal has gray or "un"pink gums, it's an indication that something is wrong. My mom is like Dr. Doolittle and ever since I was a kid, that's always been one of the first things I've been cued to check when one of the babies are ill.

It can also indicate infection, hemorrhage, and probably a dozen other serious conditions.
