You are correct, the usual is to co-own until the dog is finished at least. This is even done between show people, not only new people trying to get into showing. When you have a good line, you want to ensure it, and by co owning, you have a say in the breeding of the bitches/dogs so you will have an idea of what pups might look like. With a new person, you want to make sure that they are really interested in showing the dogs, and not merely looking for a good line to breed to make money on the puppies.
