I have taken my 5.6 lb, tall Yorkie mutt Sig on the plane a couple of times to and from Canada. I have used all 2 different designer bags - one from Target and one from New York Dog. Neither was officially airline approved. Both were soft sided enough to smoosh under the seat in front. Never had a problem.

Also - Was told by Continental that the vet certification was only needed if the pet was being transported through baggage and not if in the cabin.
