Yes, it's real. Well, I got it off the 'Net, but I've seen dogs after encounters with porcupines that look similar. They don't shoot the quills, but the quills come off real easily as soon as they poke into anything.

When dogs go up and try to bite it, the quills go into their soft skin and don't come out. A friend's dogs used to tangle with them all the time, and she had to take the dogs to the vet to get them removed.
