It's not because it has more protein. What you need to look at is the calories you should be feeding. And DON'T go by the guidelines on the bag - that's most likely too much. You can google a dog calorie calculator. 1/2 cup of one food is not the same as 1/2 cup of another food, just like 1/2 cup of peanut butter has more calories and 1/2 cup of carrots. If they are gaining weight it is because you are feeding too much. Generally the better the food the less you feed of it.
