You'd have to see the pedigree (if there is one) to be sure. If 99% of the previous dams/sires were small, then it's likely that your dog will be small , but there is usually a runt (extra small) in a litter and a "big one" in a litter.

What happens is often those who advertise in the newspaper are "backyard breeders" and more concerned about making money rather than breeding good dogs!

I would check out the parents and the breeder. He/she should ask you questions, and you should ask questions as well. A good breeder is concerned about placing her pups into the best homes. Don't ever feel that you're asking too many questions - there's no such thing! (well, unless you deviate from the topic of dogs ) Ask if he/she has a contract, does the contract say that you must spay/neuter the pup, does it protect against hereditary diseases for at least a year (liver shunt, etc.)?

The parents should be healthy. The house should be clean and there shouldn't be any odors or anything of that sort. Ask how many times he breeds the female (a female should only be bred once a year), and about the male. He/she definitely should let you see both, it's okay if he says that he used a stud service for the male (so there's not a male dog in the house). The mother/father dog should be fairly social. A bit of wariness is okay, as all mothers are concerned when strangers are around their babies, but aggression is definitely not okay. Also, ask about socialization - are the dogs kept in the house or are they outside/away from the goings-on of the house? This could lead to aggression/fear problems later on with your pup.

Hope this helps! Good luck finding the Yorkie of your dreams.
