I think if you have enough hair in there or clip it through the middle of the pony tail it will be fine. Mia has thin hair too and it works good if i clip it through the middle of her pony tail. You can always try it and send it back if it does not work for your baby. I would be happy to refund you. But if you are nervous about it being too big ~ the clamps would be perfect since they clamp .
