Cost of Breeding Lizzy,
The reason why most all breeders charge what they do - is not to make money, but that is waht it cost in all the time and cost to them invested in that litter. We just don't get two dogs together and say I want puppies. It starts ahead of time in researching the lines, understanding the standard, etc... Then yorkies usually just don't have their litters. If you work - plan on taking some days off to be with the mom. You have to be ready to help her if needed and I have not had many that will whelp on their own and clean them up right away. It is hard work for them. This last litter I had were all born breeched and doubled sack. mom was so tired I had to help pull pups out, tear open the sacks, and cut the cord. That is another thing - moms sometimes cut the cords too short and that can cause bleeding. I had one mom one time that kept licking and chewing on the cord she caused the stomach to cut open a little. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty. I use to have to cut the tails myself - because none of my local vets knew where to cut the length correctly. You don't want the tail too long or too short. Not to mention the dewclaws. It is hard work and a lot of time invested. Not to mention how long you might have to stay up with mom in the middle of the night when she starts labor. Most of them start at night. So there goes your sleep for the night. It is a good idea to have help too. Then you have the shots, vet appointments, etc.. for cost. Not to mention the puppies poop and eat days - a lot for changing papers then. Oh yea, I almost forgot. When you do the breeding - you might have to help them or hold them together afterwards during the tie. This usually takes about 20 minutes or more and can be messy when they get loose. Just don't let them jump on you. I know this sounds gross, but it is reality.
Girls - you had the cost counted up one day. How much was the total cost to have a litter? It is probably more than you think. So we are not just asking too much. One person told us that if she charge 500. for a pup - she would be loosing money. And you are young - what about your family? Do you have money to loose just to give people a pup. I know you want to help, but I think you need to really research into this further and really know how much it will cost and what is involved.
