No, you left him alone all day. He didn't get "plenty of entertainment" if he was alone. Loki's favorite thing in the whole world is a puzzle toy and even that only keeps him occupied for 30 minutes tops. I have no idea why he pooped in your shoe - that's just wierd - but dogs don't hold grudges. Maybe that's a good way for him to get attention, but not to dominate you. Loki leaves toys in my husbands shoes all the time, maybe that's a good place to store them! I bet you fed him when you got home and then he had to go... and you were in the shower. If he is crate trained then he needs to be in his crate when you can't watch him.
Well they might not hold a grudge but they do get pissed off! We had an adult Boston Terrier that traveled with us in a VW Bug 1/2 across the country. He was fine as long as he got to come with us or at least wait for us in the car. ONE time, and one time only, did we go to dinner and leave him in the motel. He urinated on my Dad's side of the bed - one big one. He never did it before or afterwards. He was completely trained - for years - had no kidney or bladder infection etc etc.... he was flat out mad that we left him there. It was sooo funny. My Dad had to go to the laundry-mat to wash the sheets. This was back in 1969 when people weren't thrilled about having any dogs in the motels.
