I had to squirt pure conditioner (my own "Tail and Mane" conditioner which you can get at any beauty supply) on my furbaby's huuuuge mat she'd somehow gotten on her foreleg, in order to tease the knots (yes multiple knots that were intertwined into one huge mat) out. I just kept on squirting it onto the mat as I worked at it with my fingers, gently massaging it into the knots and then gently tugging each of them apart. It worked all but for a couple of very small knots that I cut at with the thinning shears I have for my own hair. Once I cut those with the thinning shears, then they just sort of pulled apart and I snipped just the tiny little leftovers entirely off which didn't show at all. You might putting pure conditioner on them and working them out with your fingers.
