THank you to everyone who sent up prayers and responded to my post with such kind words. I was in such distress when I posted, I was typing while getting the entire key board wet with tears. Gia 's pancreatic enzyme test came back negative and the vet explained that hers was just a VERY SEVERE
Gastroenteritis caused by the ingestion of the pork, but in our case, we acted quickly by rushing her to him (middle of night) and getting fluids started promptly to combat dehydration (which damages vital organs very quickly, mainly the kidneys). Her stools are becoming formed now and I have visited her twice at the hospital (60 miles from my home), she is looking much better and is keeping down soft food the Vet prescribed (SD I/D) and her kidneys are working well. If nothing changes, we can bring her home tommorow.
I just never thought any kind of protein could cause such a response in a dog. I have never had a dog before (26 yrs of marriage) except for a LAB which was my daughters and lived outside. We feed him table scraps alot , including the leftover bone from Easter dinner, etc. which he happily chewed on for days without sequelae. I will not give ANY DOG people scraps again, ever! When the vet explained the biological process to my husband and myself, it made sense , but I wondered why I had never seen anything similar posted on this site. If this knowledge can prevent any other dog from getting sick as GIa has been, I am extremely thankful this web site and all the good posters who frequent it! I have given GIa small slivers of ham and turkey before, not big quantities, but he explained that her pancreas is so little that the large influx of FAT in that pork just stressed it to the max and made it become inflamed. (digestive juices come from the pancreas when we eat a big fatty meal) It all makes sense now. I prayed alot for God to make Gia better as I NEED her and LOVE her, as I know all of you understand.
ANyway, Thanks to all who cared and BEST OF LUCK with all your little yorkie friends in the future.
Love, Denise S.
