Our late Gracie (RIP, my angel) had both knees done at the same time. She was only a year old and recovered very quickly. She learned to spread her little casts and go tee tee. They shaved her back legs to do the surgery. After two weeks, the casts came off and she immediately started running and playing. We also put her in our bathtub and gave her water therapy. Always supervise water therapy because they can't get out of the tub on their own. We put her little life preserver on her as well while doing this.
I agree with your vet. Do both and get it over with. JMHO
