Dogs can be carriers of the gene for liver shunt and not have a liver shunt themselves, so some breeders think that just because the dog they are breeding does not have it, the pups won't have it. They can have it though. That's why it is so highly recommended that buyers ask their breeders to have pups bile acid tested before they go to their new homes.
