When my dog had puppies, I used an x-pen but kept part of it folded so that it was a smaller area. In there I put her bed, I just used a plastic tub with an old blanket for a bed. At first she just had enough room just for the bed and pee pad, and of course her food and water. As the puppies got older, I made the pen larger so the puppies had room to play. I also set this up in another room away from my other dogs, as she is very protective of the pups and gets upset when my other dogs would come sniffing around.
