I'd try to get him to drink water and just watch him for awhile, give the stool softener a chance to start working. Sometimes when they first start working, they do cause a bit of discomfort. Once he goes, he will feel much better. As long as the vet didn't think there's any possible bowel obstruction, he should be okay.
