Welcome to YT! Sounds like you have quite the entertaining pack. I'm jealous! For an avatar, the hard part is figuring out how to shrink the picture. It can be no bigger than 75x75 pixels. The ones cropped tightly around a face work best.
Then follow these steps:
Click on User CP in the blue bar at top
Click on Edit Avatar
Click on Choose File and find picture that you resized on your hard drive
Click on Save Changes
