I just found a training lead which doesn't go around their neck like a collar. It rests on the back of the neck, but the front rests on the chest. It took me and 3 pet store workers a while to figure out how to put it on, but I like it and so does Max. It's a harness type gizmo and made by Four Paws.
You can pull sideways on the leash which supposedly will teach the dog to walk alongside of you. Actually Max is walking much better now. It takes time, consistency and lot of patience. I also give him his way every so often so that he can smell around on his own, especially at the park.
I met a couple at the park yesterday who used to breed dogs. They were telling me not to expect Max to be really trained until at least a year and 1/2. A lot of Yorkies just have too much energy to expect them to pay attention before then.
They were telling me that mastering the walk really shows the dog who is in charge. I liked their attitude. They were telling me to always do it gently, and with love, but show my inner strength. |
