Default Microchip, Questions about losing a dog....

Ok I know everyone has said what a good idea microchips are. Both my dogs are microchipped. My question is this. If my dog was lost or stolen. How can they be found through the microchip? I'm assuming if the dog is ever taken to a vet ,the vet might scan them. But folks, why would a vet scan a "pet" if they dont suspect it's stolen? I take my dogs all the time to the vet. There isnt like a hidden scanner somewhere that will alert them that this is a missing or stolen dog . Can anyone that understands this COMPLETELY please explain it to me. The only way that they would scan an animal is if it's been found and taken to a shelter. But if someone steals your pet and ends up taking him for a first time visit , the vet wont scan that animal. So I think it sorta works but it's not a dream come true like a tracking device....
