Plane Traveling on an Airplane with a Yorkie

Has anyone ever taken their Yorkie on an airplane? If so, what size bag did you use, how big is the dog, what airline did you use? Has anyone used a carrier that was as much as 2 or 3 inches over the requirements? I had started looking into taking my little guy Riley (4 months old today and about 6.5 lbs) with me on a plane in a couple of weeks. It would be a 2 1/2 hour flight from New Jersey to Florida. I was looking at JetBlue and Continental and their rules for dogs on planes. I have a carrier for him but it seems it would be too big for either airlines requirements. It is soft-sided and bends but I have a feeling I'd still need to get a new one. However, even looking at something new and smaller, they still all seem to be too big for their size requirements. He doesn't necessarily need to stand the entire trip since it's not a long flight but I'd hate to be turned away at the airport because the carrier is still too big. Everyone's help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!
