Practice....read the book that came with it, get comfortable with threading and get some scrap material and try the stitches on it to find those that you'll be using the most. How exciting, a new machine. Mine was new in 1973 and just won't quit.
Just one other thing: If you sew through your finger, try not to faint before you back the needle out, cut the thread and put a bandaid on it.
I'm not being funny, I've done it 3 times in 30 years. Usually I make it to the bandaid part before I pass out.
