We took puppy kindergarten, and the instructor said that the mother dog would teach the puppy not to nip or bite by "taking it down". That sounds bad, but what you really do is take the puppy by the face and hold it down for a few seconds and say "No". It shows the dog who the master is. I did it gently but firmly a few times when Sophie was a puppy, and we never had a problem from then on. When you do it, remember that all you are doing is putting the dog on it's side and holding it down gently. I am sure that the mother dog never did it as gently as I did, but it certainly worked immediately and stopped it for good.
