Wow, this is great that you are studying and reading before you get your little one..wonderful. This is a great place to start and the internet is full of all kinds of great information so enjoy your studying.
In regards to worms your little one could come to you with worms and your vet will be able to check this out for you. You cannot assume that your little one will always be safe even in your own backyard as fleas are everywhere. Again your vet can recommend a good topical application to keep fleas and ticks away.
There is so much to learn but you are on the right path and I hope you continue to learn as much as you can.
