I'm so sorry for all that you've been through. Just rest assured knowing that you did all you could and more for Sandy. She lived a long life and seemingly felt no pain, and you helped her to the rainbow bridge peacefully and in comfort.
Personally, I would not considered these people "friends" anymore, mainly because they passed such a thing onto you. What they did to you, and what they didn't do for her, is absolutely horrible. In the end, you did a wonderful thing for Sandy and that's all that matters.
As for the ashes, our vet gives the option of spreading them in a beautiful orchard. I have friends that have buried the body/ashes and planted something beautiful over top so something beautiful can continue to live... this family didn't care for their pet so why do they care for the ashes? Instead of letting an urn collect dust, they should do something along these lines.
