Some use a very large crate with pads/litter box inside..while others suggest using a very small crate INSIDE an exercise pen with food/water and pads/box all inside the PEN...to provide more room and comfort.

Perhaps there is no exact way...to each his own,

My question is if I decide to use the small crate(or a bed) inside a Pen, how large of an area should I allow?

Thank you

The issue is, how long are they going to be confined, and how old is the dog. Crate training is a great tool, but will not work on a puppy that cannot wait all day to potty. It is also not good, if the dog is in the crate all night and thefn all day.

You have to use common sense and adapt the method to your individual dog and situation.

there is no ONE right way.

A combination of the two might be the most effective. use crate confinement when you are home to let them out frequently, and a larger cage when you are gone for long periods of time.
