This is nonsense. I would find another Vet ASAP. There is no way an xray is going to show what this vet is claiming and no dog would ever have to have an amputation.
Vets can feel the knee's and tell you if there is a problem or not as long as it isn't an overzealous one that knows squat and actually injures them which they can do if they don't know what they are doing.
Many knee surgeries on toy breeds of dogs, are not required so be careful of what you are doing.
