Ive heard it can take up to a year to two years. However my yorkie Pete is 2.5yrs and he just has a soft coat (not silky) so he never really lost it. Its a bit harder to care for without getting tons of mats, but over the years Ive found the best brush is a metal one that kind of looks like a comb but with round ends, not to be confused with a sharp mat breaker. The metal comb is able to get to the very bottom of the coat so with a few minutes brushing each day he stays mat free. Good Luck
