Some use a very large crate with pads/litter box inside..while others suggest using a very small crate INSIDE an exercise pen with food/water and pads/box all inside the PEN...to provide more room and comfort.

Perhaps there is no exact way...to each his own,

My question is if I decide to use the small crate(or a bed) inside a Pen, how large of an area should I allow?

Thank you
I'm a show breeder, so I use both a large crate for night time (Central Metal Crates). When pups aren't outside playing they are in 3x3 x-pen, 24 inches high.....x-pen is placed on 12 inch rubber tiles, to protect their legs...inside the x-pen area, I have a tent and a round bed, so they can either have privacy or just a place to lay around. They have a piddle pad in 1 area, water bottle and their stainless steel dish hanging on the side of the x-pen. Plenty of toys. It's worked for me very well. My pups are piddle pad trained by 8 weeks of age. Once they have gained the privledge of having full run of the house, they have piddle pads they use, just in case. Very rarely used, since they do alert me when they need to go outside.
