Ask your vet to check for collapsed trachea....my Tara who is barely 4lbs has that and it was said to be bad....and she wouldn't make four. She is seven and very healthy - if you lower their head downwards and massage their throat gently, it releases the colapse in the airway, and they are fine. Poor Tara had an op at one year old to check for this, and it was a waste of money, as I know myself what to do now, and she stops coughing. I never leave her on her own, just in case of an episode - but that is the only thing. She is happy and heathly
It is caused by not enough protein in the mother and not enough going to the pups, when she is carrying them. I told the breeder, and she was mortified. Tara was from the 6th litter of a five yr old dog, who they said was now retiring ! She's gorgeous and a model though - and very fit and healthy as long as I lower her head during coughing
