Here's the rule of thumb that is practiced by show people. Never brush a dry coat, never comb a wet coat. Never brush a dirty coat. Most any spray detangler or leave in conditioner will work when brushing. However spray the conditioner onto the brush and brush through the coat. While brushing daily helps eleviate the mats, it does over work the coat.
Yes, the detanglers and conditioners do build up. It' wise to do a clarifying shampoo about every 4th bath.
