I used to live in Wellington City where the dog parks are pretty much scrap bits of land that the Council doesn't have any other use for - I exaggerate there are one or two nice spots - and half a sandy beach.

But in the Hutt City (20km up the motorway from Wellington) where I live now there's the entire river banks between the river and the stop bank is totally dog friendly - you can walk and walk and walk!

But I have to dodge joggers and cyclists. I've told off a few people on trail bikes cos there's no motorised bikes allowed. But the rule is if you can't control your dog off lead you can't let them off lead, so if anything happens it is considered the dog and dog owner's fault no matter the circumstances. This is why I alway have treats handy in case Dougal takes a dislike to a jogger - which he has been known to do. I figure it's all good socialisation and 90% of the cyclists and joggers understand that they are in an off-leash area and act accordingly.
That's interesting. I'm a little afraid of dog parks. Even though Eddie is well socialized, I never know about the big dogs we run into. So I'm always stressing out. I'd almost rather go to areas that are not designated as unleashed areas so we run into fewer dogs.
