My mom and Dad are going through this same thing. Just about a month or so ago, someone called thier house and told them they wanted to verify a purchse made over the internet and asked to speak to my dad. He was at work so my mom got the guys number and called him. Dad said he didn't order anything and called this guy up. Come to find it out, someone had stolen his card number and had been making purchases on it for a couple of months. Of course my mom is 65 and takes care of the bills, and she didn't really look at the statements when they came, she just paid them and went on. Needless to say, my dad went back and looked on the statements and there were dozens of charges but none for big amounts. He got the names of the charges and called to see if I could look them up for him and see what type of place they were made to. All of them were to websites about business deals and online businesses as well as an email fraud protection service! I called and spoke to one guy for my dad and he told me the email address used to order and it was almost identical to my dad's except they had used one letter diffrence and added a number. So we don't know how that happened but this person had his name, card number, "email address", address, and all!! The credit card company did cancel the card and issued him a new number. Some things on the card were currency exchages in Australia. Believe me, I know what you are going thru! |
